What is a General Contractor?

A general contractor (GC) oversees your new construction, addition, or renovation work from start to finish. It is the GC’s job to work with your architect, if you have one, bid the job, apply for and obtain all necessary permits, hire the subcontractors, and coordinate the work of those subcontractors as they progress through the job to its conclusion. Many people don’t realize all the peripheral things a GC does while on the job. We manage the subcontractors, work with clients, pick out materials and fixtures, and oversee the job for quality and detail in order to make sure all of the client’s needs are met.

The employees working for Michael Lohman General Contracting are carpenters. We do demolition work if needed, but we’re primarily concerned with finish work, siding, woodworking, cabinet installation, floor installations, and so on. Anything else is done by our teams of subcontractors, with whom we’ve had a working relationship for many years. These include, from the ground up, a masonry contractor for the foundation work, plumbing contractors for the plumbing, HVAC contractors for the ductwork, framing contractors for the framing (on smaller jobs we do the framing ourselves, but larger jobs require a subcontractor) and a roofing contractor for the roof. We also maintain working relationships with a variety of specialty contractors. These include everything from specialty concrete finishes to metalwork for wrought-iron railings and unique plumbing fixtures.
